Am I My Brother’s Keeper?

Cain said to his brother Abel, “Let us go out in the field.” When they were in the field, Cain attacked his brother Abel and killed him.

Then the LORD asked Cain, Where is your brother Abel? He answered, “I do not know. Am I my brother’s keeper?”

–Genesis 4:8-9; New American Bible Revised Edition

Jealous and hateful towards his brother after God chooses favor upon Abel, Cain decides to murder him in a jealous rage. God questions Cain and he replies quite rudely and indignant, “Am I my brother’s keeper?” I’d like to flip this question unto you and have you ask yourselves this same very question in a different light. And by posing this question towards you, I mean to ask, are you looking out for your brother (or sister of course)?

If you know someone dear to your heart are you looking out for them? Are you looking out for your fellow man? Or are just minding your own business, only worried about yourself. And for those that are already Christian, if you see people living in sin around you, are you doing your duty as a Christian and leading them back to Jesus Christ? While there’s still time on this earth that person’s soul still has a chance to be redeemed but once their light is out permanently, there’s no more hope for them. Don’t be afraid to speak up and preach to them, they may not like it at first but once they finally see the light, they will be thankful for all eternity rather than suffering in the fiery pits of Hell. Remember that Jesus detested those that are “lukewarm,” those that are neither hot nor cold towards our faith. He preached us to be bold and “take up his cross” spreading the promise of salvation to everyone that inhabits the earth.

When most people live in sin they only truly care about themselves just like the selfish, self-conceited Cain. But be warned, every sin you commit has repercussions and often hurts those around you. And by the sins you commit, you may be leading other people towards damnation alongside yourself. The modernists will often ask, “How is sex (fornication–sex outside of marriage) hurting anyone when it’s a natural act initiated between two loving consenting adults?” It’s hurting you both because you need to be joined together in union in God’s church first, otherwise you are committing adultery–a mortal sin that leads to damnation if you don’t repent. Furthermore, sex is to be performed through marriage for its true purpose by God’s blessing to “Be fertile and multiply; fill the earth and subdue it” (Genesis 1:28). It’s a loving act performed through a married couple in union through God to bring about life. Anything less than that debases this amazing event into a sexual and self-gratifying objective experience.

And if you are relying on sex for pleasure, you’re just attempting to fill a deep seated void you already feel in your heart. Those that live in sin continuously try to fill this void with things of this earth, living in a completely secular and materialist worldly view because you lack the transcendent, the supernatural, in essence–fellowship with God. Everyone on this earth searches for a higher purpose. It’s written into our hearts, our very soul. It takes people many years, some a whole lifetime, and sadly for some, not even in that amount of time can they find what their soul yearns for so fervently. I’ve done my time and, through the grace of God, he led me back towards him. I’ve found that ideal, that seemed to be so unobtainable, that larger than life purpose, and I’m trying to save you all some time by bringing him to your attention. Please wake up already and stop dragging everyone along with yourselves further into damnation.

Anyone that knows me very well, must know that it is not through my own will that I command you, the Holy Spirit is working through me to wake you all up and call you all to action to do the same, to wake up those around you as well. We all strive for world peace and the end to all violence (for all intents and purposes, sin itself). Well, what if I told you that it can be done? If you would just open yourselves up to God’s will, he will give you the strength you need to overcome any and all obstacles. He’s calling you to action right now, that’s what that yearning for world peace is. It can’t be done on our own though.

It’s only through God’s grace that we can overcome sin and enlighten others. I never would have been able to conquer my own sins without his divine assistance. We are just too weak on our own. And that is most certainly not a flaw by any means. It’s because he made us this way. God is the all powerful, all knowing being full of love and righteousness, outside of time and space itself yet all around his presence is known and felt. Think about it: existence itself would not be possible without his doing. Because of his love he decided to create human beings in his likeness that would share in his almighty benevolence. Without his love and generosity, we would not be here—we owe him everything. But stop fooling yourselves, we are only in this miserable state of sin that we’re in because we brought it upon ourselves. God doesn’t will evil into this world, because he is goodness itself. We only have ourselves to blame for that.

Mankind continues to live in sin just like Cain, only living for themselves. Not helping to lead one another to eternal happiness. Turn off your blinders already, folks. My soul cries inside, “If only they would heed my words and turn back to God.” I truly feel deep sadness for the unenlightened that continue sinning thinking that there is nothing more to life. I know, I used to be there myself but please I’m begging you there’s so much more to life than you ever imagined. We are talking serious business here: your eternal state of being after this life perishes. Please heed these words and turn back to our Lord. Stop living your life as a slave to Satan and fully open yourself to the graces of God. We can all make this world a better place. God gave us his only Son so that through him we may have eternal life. That’s what it means to being a Christian: living a life in Christ. He lived a selfless life on this planet to save us all and set the prime example on how to live our lives. Truly living in Christ, is not easy, but it is in dying as slaves to Christ that we are born anew in him and freed from the world of sin. Pick up the cross alongside Jesus, and let’s make this world a better place together.

Be your brother’s keeper.
